The story of Belfast Celtic’s Patrick O’Connell, recently honoured with a blue plaque in west Belfast. In a career which saw him become the first Irishman to captain Manchester United football club, and the last All Ireland team to claim their first football title.he was the only Irishman to manage a Spanish team to win a La Liga championship with Real Betis in 1935. Patrick also saved FC Barcelona from financial ruin during the Spanish Civil War and was a founding member of La Liga in 1929.
The Man Who Saved FC Barcelona tells Don Patricio’s story from Albert St. via Old Trafford & Seville onto Barcelona. Sadly Patrick died penniless and spent 57 years in an unmarked grave in London. What makes Barca great? It’s not just Cruyff, Messi and Neymar but also names like Patrick O’Connell
